Eighty Percent of Security Software Industry - Including Four Largest Companies - Relies on Coverity to Secure Code
Symantec, McAfee, RSA Security, and PGP Use Coverity Prevent to Eliminate Security Defects Early in the Development Process
SAN FRANCISCO, June 13 –
Coverity, Inc., makers of the world’s most advanced source code analysis solution, today announced that industry leaders Symantec, McAfee, RSA Security, and PGP have all deployed Coverity Prevent to find and fix security defects in their security software products. Earlier this year, Coverity announced a contract with the US Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate to research ways to find and resolve security vulnerabilities in critical code at all levels of our nation’s infrastructure using source code analysis.
Security software makers, including Symantec, McAfee, RSA Security, and PGP, with a combined $4 billion in annual revenue, are using Coverity’s source code analysis technology to ensure delivery of secure, high quality software on a tight development schedule. Other Coverity customers that focus on security include: Check Point Software Technologies, Panda Software, and Trend Micro. Licensees of Coverity’s technology represent more than 80 percent of the $5.5 billion dollar software security market (Source: Avondale Partners).
“Innovation is a key tenet at Symantec, and we continually apply this to our products for improved accuracy and effectiveness,” said Alan Krassowski, software security architect for Symantec. “Coverity’s source code analysis product plays an important role by offering a series of security checks that help us to ensure the quality of our software code.”
“We’ve seen the average size and complexity of software balloon in recent years, and traditional testing is no longer sufficient to assure the integrity of such large codebases,” said Graham Titterington, principal security analyst for Ovum Research. “Furthermore, fixing an exploitable security hole after a product has shipped is more expensive than ever for both a software maker and its customers. Software companies are turning to source code analysis for more secure code.”
“In this day and age, it’s no longer enough to respond to exposed security vulnerabilities with patches and updates after the fact,” said Ben Chelf, CTO of Coverity. “The stakes are too high. Software developers are in search of new ways to identify security holes early in development, when they can be fixed cheaply and quickly, and source code analysis is a critical asset in those efforts.”
In 2005, Coverity was selected by the DHS Science and Technology Directorate to analyze popular open source packages for security vulnerabilities. The three-year contract, known as the “Vulnerability Discovery and Remediation Open Source Hardening Project,” calls for Coverity to conduct periodic scans of open source software used in critical deployments and provide the results to the development teams. The results of their initial scan can be found online at http://scan.coverity.com/ .
